The 10 best places to know in Portugal

Hey! No one knows better a country than a home citizen, right? So pay attention to my tips. There are lots of popular places  to visit in Portugal like the capital Lisbon, the Historic Centre of Porto and Guimarães, so here I’m going to show you ten places that are not so well known but are also amasing.

Pitões of Junia – Geres National Park – Northern Portugal

Welcome to the Natural Park of Serra do Geres, in the north of Portugal doing frontier with Spain, away from the eyes of the beaten tourist route. Here comes only one who knows this area really worth it and here it is possible to know the deep Portugal. Pitões of Junia is a really small village lost in these mountains that stopped in time, for a long time.

Tavira – Algarve- Southern Portugal

The Algarve is the most tourist region of Portugal. Do not go there unless you know very well where to go. And one of the places to go is Tavira, just a few kilometers from the Spanish border. In this picturesque town, probably the most beautiful of the Algarve, you can see how was the Algarve from another era, with its houses and white churches. Oh, there have now also a beach and a dream island!

Comporta – Alentejo – Southern Portugal

Want to know the secret corner where the Lisbon people come to the beach on the weekend? Is here. Not so secret, but you can be sure you will not find many tourists! By the way, to the beach, all the Alentejo coast is the preferred site of the Portuguese, as yet safe from most tourists. Enjoy!

Berlengas Island – Central Portugal

Berlengas is a small island off the coast of Peniche village. Despite being Portuguese, they are the seagulls who send there. It is worth visiting this big rock for their strong that transports us to a time of pirates and the crystalline waters that enter the islet inside, creating caves that the local fishermen do visit us in their boats!

Piódão – Central Portugal

Right in the center of the country there is little land called Piódão. To get there the road is twist and curve through valleys and hills. It’s not easy. But it’s worth. The houses line up next to each other, all made with schist stones, evenly, with white windows contrasting with the brown of the walls. The scarlet white church in the middle of the village gives the final touch to this scenario. Probably the most beautiful village of Portugal.

Douro Valley

Many people go to Porto. Many people will taste the Port wine in the cellars. But very few do the boat ride or river train up to see the Douro Valley, where the vineyards of the most famous Portuguese wine, which is a crime! This region, world heritage, is at least a visit of a mandatory day for anyone going to Porto. If you have time, stay one night and go for a walk through the vineyards!

Almourol Castle – Ribatejo – Central Portugal

This is my favorite castle in Portugal. Situated in the Ribatejo, a region that is usually the way, but where you eat very well, Almurol Castle is mandatory site for those who are fan of castles and medieval times!

S. Pedro de Moel – Central Portugal

Portugal has a very close connection with the sea. Being by the sea and watch the big waves of the Atlantic hitting the rocks and sweep the long sandy beaches are special moments for us. And in my opinion, there is no place in Portugal to see the waves as in S. Pedro de Moel, the Lighthouse rock. And I say no more.

The north of Portugal

This region is full of friendly terrinhas and well kept. It deserves a day roadtrip to cycle through them, to talk to the Ti Manel and the Ti Maria and taste good food in the North. Ponte de Lima is one of my favorite towns, and have the opportunity to visit at the time of Ponte de Lima Parties, one of the largest festivals of Portugal!

Serra da Estrela – Border High- Central Portugal

Continental Portugal only has a real mountain which is the Serra da Estrela. Here come the Portuguese when they want to see snow for the first time. But for those who enjoy hiking, this saw offers a wild and barren landscape, itself the highest altitude, covered with granite and lakes stones.

I hope that now you’re convinced that it’s worth staying in Portugal more than the usual quick little visit. So see you soon in one of this amasing places!
